Earthlight Studio starts by carefully selecting the right kind of glass to produce the best result for a given piece. We prefer making original pieces, but also enjoy working in traditional styles, and the different kinds of glass on the market produce very different effects. Stained glass is constantly evolving, and we’re evolving with it.

Stained glass windows have been described as "translucent pictures," but that still falls short of their true quality. A picture is a relatively static thing, but a stained glass window changes dramatically with the ambient light. From sunrise to sunset, from bright day or cloudy, they provide an ever-changing play of light and color.

We work exclusively with the Tiffany method, in which each piece of glass is wrapped in copper foil and the seams carefully soldered. The result is a piece that is much stronger than a leaded window, and which can include more intricate detail.

Once a design is finalized (whether a traditional pattern, an original Earthlight pattern or a new design), it’s turned into a full-size pattern and transferred to the selected glass. Each piece is cut, ground, and wrapped in copper foil. The panel is then soldered (lead-free solder is available on request). A patina is applied to the solder seams, and the glass is polished.

For hanging panels, we will provide custom frames in your choice of metal or oak. If the piece is to be permanently installed as a window, a custom thermo pane window is mounted to the outside surface, with the stained glass panel on the inside.
