Earthlight Studio is owned and operated by Bob Sharen. That would be me, and I’ve had a long love affair with glass.

I learned glassblowing and stained glass in art school, over 30 years ago. Since glassblowing requires a great deal of expensive equipment, I turned more and more toward stained glass as a form of expression. I focused on various kinds of stained glass panels and experimented with the many types of glass available from different manufacturers.

I did other things, too… In the 1970s, I ran a health food restaurant in Carmel, California. And in 1978, I started a 23-year run as a colorist for Marvel Comics in New York. If you were ever a fan of Spider-Man, chances are you’ve seen some of my work.

In all that time, I continued to work with glass. In the early 1990s, my work was greatly influenced by two good friends: glassblower J. Allen Hough and jeweler Will Foerster.

In Al's glassblowing studio I began fabricating three dimensional forms to incorporate into my panels. Through exposure to Will’s work in fine lapidary, I got interested in using crystals and agates. In fact this combination of gem stones and glass was the genesis of the name "Earthlight” – something to suggest the beauty of these magical substances which come from the depths of the earth, yet still transmit light.

Earthlight Studio was thus born of creative spirit, a fascination with light and color, and the sheer fun of playing with glass.
